Péter Szijjártó summoned by Hungarian security committee over BYD role

The Hungarian Parliamentary National Security Committee has summoned former Foreign and Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó for a hearing on Monday, October 5. The summons follows Szijjártó's recent appointment to a leadership role at the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD.

Members of the Tisza Party have raised serious concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest and national security risks. They allege that during his twelve-year tenure as minister, Szijjártó facilitated significant state support for BYD, including over 70 billion HUF in infrastructure development involving roads, railways, and water networks.

Additionally, the opposition claims Szijjártó promoted the investment's special economic status and expedited visa procedures for approximately 10,000 Chinese guest workers, a figure comparable to the number of jobs the company promised to create. Lawmakers argue that Szijjártó's access to highly sensitive foreign policy, economic, and national security information poses a risk now that he is working for a foreign corporation.
