Péter Szijjártó testifies before Hungarian security committee regarding BYD ties

Former Hungarian Foreign and Economic Minister Péter Szijjártó appeared before the Hungarian Parliament's National Security Committee for a closed-door hearing. The investigation, initiated by Committee Chairman István Apáti, focuses on Szijjártó's professional relationship with the Chinese automaker BYD and potential national security risks associated with it.

Before the hearing, Szijjártó addressed public concerns regarding state subsidies provided for the construction of the BYD plant in Szeged. He stated that the government support remained within the customary framework for large-scale investments and characterized the project as a major economic success for Hungary, noting that several other European nations competed to host the factory.

Szijjártó also defended the infrastructure developments in Szeged related to the project, claiming they were coordinated with local authorities and serve the community. He dismissed claims regarding the use of guest workers as a “gross misunderstanding,” explaining that previous regulations allowed for specific frameworks to ensure high-tech facilities could be commissioned quickly.
