PTPA lawsuit against ATP, WTA and Grand Slams allowed to proceed
A US federal court has rejected attempts by the ATP, WTA, and Grand Slam organizers to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA). Judge Margaret M. Garnett denied multiple requests from the defendants to dismiss parts of the case, move it to arbitration, or change the jurisdiction.
The lawsuit, initiated in March 2025, alleges that major tennis organizations operate like a cartel by restricting competition and limiting players' control over their careers. Specific claims include the manipulation of ranking points to force participation in sanctioned events, suppression of player earnings, and restrictions on commercial and sponsorship rights.
The ruling allows the case to proceed into the discovery phase, which may require the organizations to disclose internal financial records and private communications. The PTPA, which represents a significant portion of top-ranked players, is seeking structural changes to the sport's governance rather than direct financial damages.
