Puan Maharani calls for review of sanitary pad tax and improved healthcare access

Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to reconsider the taxation on sanitary pads, also known as the period tax. Following public outcry on social media regarding the rising cost of living, Maharani emphasized that sanitary pads are a primary biological necessity for women rather than a secondary good. Currently, sanitary pads in Indonesia are subject to an effective Value Added Tax (VAT) of 11 percent, as they are categorized as taxable goods and are not yet listed as essential goods exempt from VAT.

Separately, Maharani called for improved accessibility to healthcare services following the death of a toddler in South Sulawesi. The child, identified as NS, reportedly suffered from health complications and a lack of nutrition before passing away after receiving intensive care. Maharani stressed that the state must provide proactive medical assistance, particularly for vulnerable families with limited access to information. She encouraged local governments and village officials to play a more active role in ensuring citizens can access medical help and necessary support services.
