Pub Choir event in Hong Kong turns audience into performers
More than 500 people in a sold-out Hong Kong venue participated in a unique musical event where the audience became the performers. Instead of a traditional band or singer, Astrid Jorgensen, a former music professor and founder of the Pub Choir project, led the crowd in a 90-minute session to learn and perform the Earth, Wind & Fire hit ‘September’.
Founded in Australia in 2017, Pub Choir operates without auditions or the requirement of musical expertise. Participants are divided into three groups to learn different vocal parts, creating a multi-part harmony. Jorgensen describes the event as a mix of a concert, communal singing, and stand-up comedy.
The project emphasizes a digital detox, encouraging attendees to put away mobile phones to focus on direct human connection. Jorgensen suggests the growing popularity of such events stems from a desire for screen-free, participatory experiences. Experts note that group singing can improve mood, reduce stress, and foster a sense of community through synchronized breathing and movement.
