Public art drives economic development and pride in regional towns
Public art advocates in the region suggest that art installations foster community pride and drive economic development. Various projects have been implemented across several towns, including decorative metal birdhouses created by students at the Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center and a new mural dedicated by Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome.
In Uniontown, Storey Square features mosaics, murals, and sculptures of musicians. Other notable works include a railroad-themed mural in Connellsville and a 1960s-inspired mural on a Volkswagen Beetle in Waynesburg.
Daniel Cocks, executive director of the Fayette County Cultural Trust, noted the impact of the ‘Coke to Spokes’ sculpture in Connellsville. The piece, which connects the area’s coal heritage to its modern cycling tourism via the Great Allegheny Passage, was installed in an area that previously lacked development. Cocks highlighted that such art can lead to long-term benefits, such as increased tourism and local spending.
