Public distrust in AI technology and industry leaders rises

A survey conducted by CNBC’s Generation Labs reveals widespread public skepticism regarding artificial intelligence and its industry leaders. According to the report, 45% of respondents believe AI will have a negative impact on their careers, while only 10% believe it will be helpful.

Regarding oversight, 40% of those surveyed believe the federal government should establish rules for AI, and 36% favor an independent expert body, with only 8% stating that AI should remain unregulated. Additionally, 60% of respondents believe the construction of data centers should be slowed down.

Public trust in prominent AI executives is notably low. The survey found that a majority of respondents do not trust any of the nine key industry leaders named. Palantir CEO Alex Karp received the lowest trust rating at 21% (with 81% reporting they do not trust him), while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had the highest distrust rating at 65%. Other leaders, including Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, Jensen Huang, and Elon Musk, each saw approximately 70% of respondents report a lack of trust.
