Lika environmental protest scheduled for September 5 in Zagreb

A large-scale protest titled ‘Hodaj za Liku, hodaj za Hrvatsku’ (Walk for Lika, Walk for Croatia) is scheduled for September 5 in Zagreb. The movement is organized by the ‘Gospić je naš dom’ initiative and is driven by concerns over the illegal disposal of hazardous waste in the Lika region and the potential environmental impact of large-scale industrial megafarms.

More than 200 public figures, including musicians, actors, and professors, have expressed support for the cause, emphasizing that the issue is a matter of public health and fundamental human rights rather than a partisan political struggle. Supporters are calling for institutional accountability and stricter regulations to prevent the country from becoming a dumping ground for waste.

The protest has sparked significant political debate. While organizers maintain the movement is non-partisan and focused on environmental protection, some political figures have criticized the involvement of certain ideological groups. Meanwhile, local leaders have called for national solidarity to protect the country's water and soil.
