Public health concerns rise in Mannar and Sabah

In Kurusu Nagar, Mannar, residents are facing significant hardships due to ongoing waste burning at a municipal disposal site. The sudden ignition of garbage has released continuous smoke, forcing many residents, including pregnant women, children, and the elderly, to flee their homes to avoid respiratory difficulties and other health issues. Although the Mannar Municipal Council deployed fire engines to control the blaze, efforts have been largely ineffective as the waste continues to reignite. Residents are calling for a permanent solution and proper waste management to prevent the environmental and health impacts caused by burning materials like polythene.

In Sabah, Malaysia, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has raised concerns regarding a severe shortage of suitable housing for medical personnel, particularly in rural and remote areas. Dr. Brandon Patrick Senagang, President of the Sabah MMA, noted that many existing staff quarters are dilapidated. The lack of adequate accommodation forces medical officers to endure long commutes, leading to increased physical exhaustion, financial strain, and a higher risk of burnout. He urged the federal government to prioritize basic housing infrastructure for healthcare workers to ensure the sustainability of medical services in rural communities.
