Public health experts issue hygiene guidelines for new school year

As the new school year begins, health experts are emphasizing routine hygiene and lifestyle habits to manage the increased risk of infectious diseases among students and teachers.

The Institute of Public Health recommends several key preventative measures, including frequent handwashing with soap for at least 20 seconds, regular ventilation of classrooms, and adhering to immunization schedules. To prevent the spread of germs, individuals are advised to cough or sneeze into a tissue or the crook of their elbow, avoid sharing personal items like water bottles or utensils, and maintain personal hygiene.

Experts note that children, particularly those entering daycare or first grade, often experience frequent respiratory infections as their immune systems interact with new environments. Rather than relying on supplements or syrups to ‘boost’ immunity, health professionals stress the importance of a consistent routine involving adequate sleep, a varied diet, physical activity, hydration, and staying home when symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat are present.
