Public health guidance stresses importance of annual syphilis screening

Public health guidance emphasizes the necessity of routine sexual health screening, specifically recommending that sexually active individuals undergo syphilis testing at least once a year, even in the absence of symptoms. Because the bacterium Treponema pallidum can persist silently in the body, many infections remain undetected without regular assessment.

In Manaus, health officials reported rising infection rates, with acquired syphilis cases among adults averaging 361 per month in 2026, a 12.1 percent increase from the previous year. Congenital syphilis cases in the city also saw a 37.5 percent increase compared to 2025 levels. Untreated syphilis during pregnancy carries severe risks, including miscarriage, premature birth, and neurological damage to the newborn.

Effective screening involves more than just testing for every possible infection; clinicians recommend tailoring tests to an individual's specific sexual history, type of contact, and timing. Public health systems offer various diagnostic tools, including traditional VDRL blood tests and rapid tests that can provide results in under 30 minutes.
