Public health initiatives and challenges in Yucatan Peninsula
Public health initiatives and challenges are unfolding across the Yucatan Peninsula. In Yucatán, Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena has launched a national reinforcement week for canine and feline rabies vaccination. The campaign aims to administer 97,400 doses in high-risk areas, benefiting over 487,000 residents. Additionally, the State Animal Welfare Center has received 11 million pesos for rehabilitation to provide permanent free sterilization services.
In Quintana Roo, more than 10 million pesos have been allocated for sanitary surveillance throughout 2026. These federal funds, provided via Cofepris, will target the monitoring of food, water, beaches, and medications to ensure consumer safety and manage health emergencies.
Meanwhile, health experts at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) are reporting an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within the state. Data indicates rising cases of HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Researchers emphasize the need for improved sexual education, rapid testing, and better access to healthcare to combat late diagnoses and the stigma associated with these conditions.
