Public health initiatives proposed in Entre Ríos and Sinaloa
Legislative initiatives are being introduced in Argentina and Mexico to address specific public health concerns.
In Entre Ríos, Argentina, a bill has been submitted to the Chamber of Deputies to establish a comprehensive program for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of syphilis. This follows a reported 72% increase in cases, with 811 notifications recorded during the first 44 weeks of 2025 compared to 467 during the same period in 2024. The program aims to utilize the provincial health network, specifically primary care centers, to improve patient follow-up and prevent congenital syphilis. Data indicates that 76% of cases in Argentina occur in the 15 to 39 age group.
In Sinaloa, Mexico, Deputy Bernardino Antelo Esper has proposed an amendment to the State Health Law to strengthen the prevention and early detection of eye diseases. The initiative seeks to mandate the State Health Secretariat to implement permanent visual health education campaigns and specialized screenings. The proposal focuses on identifying conditions such as glaucoma that can lead to visual impairment or blindness, particularly targeting individuals over 40 and other high-risk populations.
