Public Health Institute launches hand hygiene campaign
To mark Global Handwashing Day on October 15, 2026, the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) has launched a poster campaign titled 'Where were your hands today?' to address hygiene misconceptions and promote correct techniques.
Health experts emphasize that thorough hand washing, which typically takes about one minute, is a critical measure to reduce the risk of infections, particularly during the autumn season when susceptibility to respiratory viruses increases. Key guidance includes lathering hands with soap for 20 to 30 seconds, ensuring coverage of finger spaces and skin folds. Notably, water temperature does not impact the effectiveness of pathogen removal.
A survey by the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA) indicates that Germans wash their hands an average of 13 times per day. Proper hygiene is recommended after contact with surfaces, coughing, sneezing, or before handling food.
