Measles cases surge in U.S. to highest levels since 1991
The United States is experiencing a significant surge in measles, with the CDC reporting 2,566 confirmed cases and 38 outbreaks in 2026. This represents the highest annual case count since 1991. Approximately 93% of these cases have occurred in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. While there have been 169 hospitalizations, there have been zero confirmed deaths in the U.S. this year, compared to three in 2025.
Localized outbreaks are being investigated in several regions. In Wisconsin, health officials are tracking an outbreak of 15 cases in southwestern counties. In Kentucky, a confirmed case in Christian County has prompted concerns of a wider outbreak, with officials suggesting the individual may have been exposed by an out-of-state visitor. Additionally, Tioga County is investigating a single confirmed case in an unvaccinated resident.
International reports also indicate rising concerns. In Mexico, Quintana Roo has recorded 21 new cases in five days, bringing the total to 307. In Peru, the Ministry of Health has extended a sanitary emergency for 90 days due to active transmission in Puno and risks in Lima, Arequipa, and Cusco. In Juliaca, Peru, health officials are deploying vaccination brigades to address over 800 cases.
