Public health updates: HIV treatment challenges in Equatorial Guinea and Chagas progress in Argentina

In Equatorial Guinea, the Ministry of Health and Health Infrastructures has reported challenges regarding antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence during its National Communication and Awareness Campaign against HIV. While the campaign has reached 18 districts and conducted over 22,000 tests—identifying 1,916 positive cases—only 9.4% of the 1,691 new diagnoses have initiated ART. Health officials noted that treatment interruption remains a leading cause of death and disease progression, prompting calls for deeper investigation into why patients are not maintaining therapy.

In Argentina, health officials are highlighting progress in the fight against Chagas disease, particularly in the endemic province of Santiago del Estero. Dr. Sandra Seu, Director of Vector-Transmitted Diseases, noted that since 2005, social housing plans and safe blood banks have helped reduce transmission. While some departments are nearing vector-free status, authorities warned against complacency, emphasizing that Chagas remains a neglected disease often linked to specific socioeconomic conditions and requires continuous sanitary surveillance.
