Public health warnings issued regarding West Nile virus and extreme heat risks

Epidemiologist Gikas Magorkinis has provided insights into the West Nile virus, noting that most infected individuals will not realize they have been contracted the virus. He stated that central nervous system involvement occurs in approximately one in 150 cases. Severe symptoms requiring immediate medical attention include high fever, intense headache, lethargy, photophobia, spasms, or paralysis. There is currently no specific treatment for the virus, so care is supportive based on clinical presentation.

Separately, a study published in Lancet Planetary Health by researchers from Stanford University warns that global warming poses an increasing threat to individuals over the age of 60. The research suggests that previous studies may have underestimated the risks to the elderly by failing to adequately account for the wet-bulb temperature—the combination of heat and humidity. The study highlights that rising temperatures and humidity levels will expose older populations to increasingly intolerable conditions through the year 2100.
