Public housing authorities in Macau and Hong Kong address supply and living standards

Public housing authorities in Macau and Hong Kong are addressing challenges related to housing supply and living standards. In Macau, the Housing Bureau (IH) is studying the necessity of allocating two-bedroom social housing units to two-person households to ensure efficient resource use. This follows inquiries regarding adult parent-child households being assigned one-bedroom units. The IH noted that four social housing projects in the New Urban Zone A are expected to be completed in phases during the second half of 2026, totaling 4,088 units. Currently, 2,020 households remain on the social housing waiting list.

In Hong Kong, controversy has emerged over the allocation of subdivided units within the government's housing stock. While some units in prime locations offer low monthly rents, residents have criticized the designs for forcing communal living arrangements, such as shared bathrooms, between unrelated tenants. The Housing Department maintains these designs maximize supply in high-demand areas, but critics argue the lack of privacy and aging infrastructure contribute to high vacancy rates, as some applicants reject offers after waiting up to a decade.
