Public libraries evolve into multifunctional community and digital learning hubs

Public libraries are evolving from traditional book repositories into multifunctional community hubs. In Switzerland, approximately 42 percent of the population visited a library or media center in 2024. Modern library architecture must now balance diverse needs, such as quiet study zones, collaborative workspaces, digital research areas, and social meeting points, while managing acoustic and technical requirements.

In Germany, libraries are also expanding their roles as educational centers to address declining academic performance in core competencies. A new initiative titled ‘Programming with the Elephant’ is launching this autumn in Rhineland-Palatinate. This collaboration between the Landesbibliothekszentrum Rheinland-Pfalz, WDR, and SWR aims to teach basic programming skills to kindergarten and primary school children through playful digital tools. The project, which includes the ‘If-Then Machine’ learning game, is designed to provide low-threshold access to digital education through public library networks.
