Public lighting failures and cable thefts reported in Barahona and Oímbra

Residents in Barahona, Dominican Republic, are reporting significant darkness in the Cañada de Papoy area due to five street lamps being out of service. Despite recent attempts by the City Hall to repair two lamps, the equipment failed again, leaving the sector in near-total darkness at night. Local community members have expressed concerns that the lack of lighting increases the risk of robberies and other criminal activities, and they are calling on Mayor Milton Fernández to urgently replace the damaged equipment.

In Oímbra, Spain, authorities are dealing with the theft of 360 meters of public lighting cable. Thieves stole 160 meters in Bousés and 200 meters in Casas dos Montes, leaving the streets of both villages without illumination. Mayor Ana Villarino confirmed that a formal complaint has been filed and the council is working to restore service. The thefts are driven by the value of the copper contained within the cables, which is highly sought after for recycling.
