Public Ministry of Bahia Oversees Safety During Bom Jesus da Lapa Pilgrimage

The Public Ministry of the State of Bahia (MPBA) operated on an on‑call basis throughout the Romaria of Bom Jesus da Lapa, which took place from July 28 to August 6. Promoters, technical staff and public servants carried out inspections at multiple sites in the municipality, focusing on the security of pilgrims, the protection of children and adolescents, and the proper delivery of public health services.

The effort was led by Justice Prosecutor Raquel Souza of the 3rd Prosecutor’s Office in Bom Jesus da Lapa. Inspectors coordinated with the diocesan authorities, the municipal government and the 20th Military Fire Battalion to verify compliance with safety measures, including the isolation of the hill tower, the regulation of visitor flow, mandatory helmet use in the Resurrection Grotto, and the structural integrity of the sanctuary’s geotechnical areas. Identified irregularities were reported and corrected by the fire battalion and the diocese. Additional checks covered the municipal market and a local bazaar, with particular attention to the documentation and supervision of children and adolescents in lodging establishments.
