Colombia Government condemns misogynistic attacks against First Lady

The Colombian government, led by the administration of Abelardo De la Espriella, has issued a formal condemnation of comments made by cartoonist Julio César González, known as ‘Matador’, directed at First Lady Ana Lucía Pineda. In a unanimous statement from the cabinet and high-ranking officials, the administration characterized the remarks as ‘misogynistic, sexist, and degrading.’

The controversy stems from posts on the social network X, where the cartoonist used derogatory terms such as ‘ratita’ and made disparaging comments regarding Pineda’s physical appearance while questioning the management of earthquake relief funds in Pereira. The government emphasized that while freedom of expression and political satire are protected, the ‘animalization of a woman’ and attacks on her body are forms of disqualification that seek to undermine her dignity and leadership.

In response, the government has formally requested that the Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General de la Nación) investigate the statements to determine if they constitute punishable conduct. Additionally, the law firm De La Espriella Lawyers announced it would pursue legal action against the cartoonist for violating human dignity and employing symbolic violence against women.
