Public Service Association urges Labour to reverse job cuts

The Public Service Association (PSA) is calling on the Labour Party to commit to reversing planned public service job cuts in New Zealand. The association is urging Labour to explicitly state in its fiscal strategy that it will roll back the National-led Government’s proposal to reduce nearly 9,000 public service positions over the next three years.

Fleur Fitzsimons, National Secretary for the PSA, described the government's actions as an ‘unprecedented assault on the public service’ driven by a desire to save money rather than a clear strategy. The PSA warned that these cuts could cause irreversible damage to essential services and argued that a strong public service is necessary to address challenges such as an aging population and climate change.
