Public Service Union pledges no protection for corrupt officers
The Public Service Union (PSU) has announced that it will not use its membership to shield public officers from accountability in cases of proven misconduct or corruption. In a statement issued on October 6, 2026, the union emphasized that while it is committed to ensuring members receive fair representation and due process, it will not condone improper conduct.
The announcement follows reports of alleged misconduct within the Customs and Immigration Departments, including a criminal charge against an immigration officer accused of extortion. PSU President Dean Flowers stated that if officers are found to have committed crimes or breached regulations, the law should take its course, regardless of whether the individual is a union member.
The union called for government ministries to conduct prompt, impartial, and transparent investigations. It specifically referenced the Public Service Regulations regarding integrity and misconduct, asserting that these provisions must be applied consistently to all officers. While supporting disciplinary actions and removals for corrupt officials, the PSU maintained that all accused individuals must be afforded the right to respond to allegations through established legal and disciplinary procedures.
