Public transport challenges in Unterallgäu and the Allgäu region
A new public transport atlas has identified significant gaps in local transit within the Unterallgäu district of Germany. While Memmingen and Mindelheim received high ratings, several municipalities including Böhen, Pleß, Boos, and Winterrieden scored poorly, making cars essential for commuting to work or accessing medical services. The district administrator has criticized the atlas for being incomplete.
In the broader Außerfern-Allgäu, Außerfern, Tirol, and Vorarlberg region, efforts are underway to improve rail freight transport. A study by the EUREGIO salina project suggests that increasing rail freight does not necessarily require new tracks, but rather better utilization of existing infrastructure and more intelligent bundling of transport volumes. The goal is to overcome a cycle of low cargo volumes and unattractive connections through better cooperation between logistics providers, policymakers, and infrastructure operators.
