Public transport fare reviews initiated in Antigua and Barbuda and Ireland
In Antigua and Barbuda, the Cabinet has established a committee to conduct a 90-day review of proposed public bus fare changes. The review aims to address the rising operating costs faced by bus operators—including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and labor—while considering the financial impact on commuters, students, and senior citizens. The proposals under examination include phased adjustments to standard fares, new holiday fare structures, and changes to subsidies for primary schoolchildren.
In Ireland, the National Transport Authority has indicated that public transport fares may undergo annual reviews due to rising operating costs. Passengers are already facing a 15% increase starting in January. While the government maintains that fare revenue is essential for network expansion and reliability, political debate has emerged regarding the impact of these increases on household finances and the potential to discourage public transport usage.
