Brazil implements free public transport for election second round

To facilitate voter movement during the 2026 presidential election second round, various Brazilian states and municipalities have implemented free public transportation. Following Superior Electoral Court (TSE) resolutions, governments are required to provide free urban, intermunicipal, and metropolitan transport to ensure citizens can reach polling stations.

In Pará, free road and water transport is available between municipalities, including the Metropolitan BRT. In Minas Gerais, free services extend to metropolitan buses and the Belo Horizonte metro. Pernambuco has also guaranteed free transport in the Recife Metropolitan Region and the state's interior, with officials warning that companies failing to comply will face fines. In Rio Branco, the entire bus fleet is operating free of charge.

While most regions report smooth operations, some issues have emerged. In Valença, Bahia, reports surfaced regarding the suspension of conventional maritime transport in favor of paid fast boat services, despite expected gratuity. Additionally, political leaders have called for extended voting hours in areas where bus fleet reductions may hinder voter access.
