Public transport modernization efforts underway in Algeria and Mauritius

Algeria has launched a program to modernize its public passenger transport fleet by permanently withdrawing vehicles aged 25 years or older. Transport operators with buses manufactured in 1996 or earlier must submit documentation to local transport directorates to begin the replacement process. To support this transition, the state is offering several incentives, including a subsidy covering 20% of the cost of a new bus, a 10% contribution from the buyer, and exemptions from VAT and customs duties. Remaining balances can be paid over installments of up to 10 years.

In Mauritius, Minister of Land Transport Osman Mahomed announced initiatives to implement cashless ticketing and GPS tracking across the public bus network. The ministry has prepared tender documents for online ticket purchasing and issued notifications to State Informatics Ltd to install GPS in 2,000 buses. These upgrades aim to allow passengers to locate buses in real-time and improve the efficiency of government funds allocated to bus owners. These measures are part of a broader National Transport Strategy to address economic, social, and environmental challenges.
