Public transport pricing shifts in Norway and Denmark

Public transport pricing is seeing significant shifts in Scandinavia, with contrasting developments in Norway and Denmark.

In Norway, Østfold kollektivtrafikk is implementing a major price reduction for 30-day period tickets in the Nedre Glomma region. Starting September 1, prices for adult tickets will drop from 370 to 190 kroner, a 50 percent decrease. This initiative, which lasts until January 2027, aims to encourage commuters to choose buses over cars following previous price cuts in March.

Conversely, in Denmark, students in the Viborg municipality are facing increased costs. Following the conclusion of a pilot program, cheaper bus tickets are now restricted to city and local buses. This change has resulted in price hikes for students living in areas served by regional buses, such as Midttrafik. For some commuters, monthly costs have risen from 210 to 453 kroner, leading to concerns regarding inequality for those living outside urban centers.
