Public transport subsidies launched for seniors and vulnerable groups in Chile and Rionegro
Various regional initiatives are providing public transportation subsidies to vulnerable populations.
In Chile, individuals aged 65 and older are eligible for a 50% discount on public transport fares. This benefit applies to over 31,000 buses, the Santiago Metro, the Valparaíso Metro, Valparaíso trolleybuses, and Biotren. To access the preferential rate in Santiago, seniors must use the Intermodal Senior Citizen Card (TAM), which costs $1,550 for a one-time fee. The card allows for a $390 fare regardless of the time of day or number of transfers. The card can be requested through a Compensation Fund, ChileAtiende branches, or Metro offices.
In Rionegro, a new subsidy program offers a 50% reduction in public transport fares for students, people over 60, and persons with disabilities. Students may access up to 40 subsidized trips per month, while seniors and persons with disabilities are limited to 10 trips per month. Applicants must meet specific residency, enrollment, or disability certification requirements and must be registered in local social focalization mechanisms. Applications are processed through the municipal government's official website.
