Public transport usage rises in Sweden following price reductions
Recent data and political debates in Sweden highlight a significant gap between the public's desire for sustainable travel and their actual commuting habits. According to Västtrafik’s annual survey, eight out of ten respondents state that travel time is the primary factor determining their choice of transport, often leading them to choose cars over public options despite a strong desire to reduce carbon emissions.
In response to shifting policies and price reductions, there has been a notable surge in public transport usage across several regions. Following price cuts on monthly passes, ticket sales doubled in Kalmar and Stockholm counties, increased by 150 percent in Uppsala, and saw a fourfold increase in Västra Götaland.
While the car remains a popular choice for many, there is growing support for increased investment in public transit. Approximately 70 percent of surveyed residents believe society should prioritize public transport investment, and 53 percent indicated they would travel more via public transit if employers provided ticket subsidies.
