Public universities report enrollment growth for fall 2026

Several public university systems are reporting positive enrollment trends for the fall 2026 academic year.

The University of South Carolina Upstate reported a 7.7% increase in total enrollment, welcoming 5,442 students. This growth was driven by a 6.9% rise in undergraduate enrollment and a significant 17% increase in graduate students. Additionally, the university saw a 26.6% increase in high school dual-enrollment and non-degree-seeking students.

In South Dakota, the Board of Regents reported that the state's public university system welcomed over 35,000 students, maintaining a steady headcount while seeing growth in first-time freshman enrollment. Black Hills State University specifically noted its highest enrollment in five years, with more than 3,500 students currently enrolled.
