Publishers Face Sharp Ad Supply Decline as AI and Zero‑Click Search Cut Traffic
Publishers are confronting a steep drop in ad supply, with the second quarter of 2026 showing a 32‑41% decline in the United States and the United Kingdom. The fall is linked to AI‑generated search results and “zero‑click” features that keep users on search pages rather than directing them to news sites, reducing inbound traffic for publishers.
Despite the lower volume of impressions, rising eCPM rates have softened revenue losses, especially in the UK where higher prices offset the supply shock. In the US, the decline has been deeper, compounded by reduced advertiser confidence following the Iran‑US conflict that began in February 2026. Mobile usage continues to grow, prompting publishers to view community tools—comments, polls, and other engagement features—as a way to increase time‑on‑site and monetize each session more effectively.
Disqus reports that mobile page‑view share has risen from 67 % in 2021 to over 73 % today, underscoring the shift toward mobile‑first strategies. Publishers are therefore experimenting with tighter integration of community features to sustain revenue in an environment where traditional ad slots are shrinking.
