Publishers file amended lawsuit against Iowa school book ban

Major publishing houses, including Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Simon & Schuster, have filed an amended complaint in a legal challenge against Iowa’s SF 496 law. The coalition, which includes the Authors Guild and several bestselling authors, seeks to overturn provisions of the legislation that mandate the removal of books containing “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act” from school libraries.

Passed in 2023 under Republican leadership, SF 496 also restricts discussions regarding sexual identity and gender orientation in K-6 classrooms and limits the use of preferred pronouns by school staff without parental consent. While a previous court ruling allowed the state to enforce certain aspects of the law, the plaintiffs are now seeking to establish legal precedent that protects works with significant literary and historical value from being removed due to imprecise language in the statute.
