Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima to step down

Soichiro Takashima, the current Mayor of Fukuoka City, has announced via social media that he will not seek a fifth term in the upcoming mayoral election. The election is scheduled for November 15, with the official announcement period beginning on November 1.

Takashima, who has served four terms since first being elected in 2010, stated that his decision is a deliberate attempt to “pass the baton to the next generation.” He emphasized that his choice is not due to health issues, but rather a desire to prevent the stagnation that can occur when a single leader holds power for too long.

He noted that while he still has many goals for the city, he wants to create a path that makes it easier for new candidates to step forward and challenge for leadership. During his tenure, Fukuoka has seen significant growth, including a population increase of 200,000 and a 1.6-fold increase in tax revenue.
