Brazilian universities face political tension and security threats
Brazilian universities are facing heightened tensions and security concerns amid political polarization and upcoming elections. Several private institutions, including PUC-Rio and Mackenzie University, have banned political-partisan activities on their campuses to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities following unauthorized social media mobilizations.
In the public sector, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) is demanding explanations from federal universities regarding protection measures for students and faculty. This follows reports of serious threats, including plans to set fire to the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) and attempts to attack student leaders at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
Individual faculty members have also reported political persecution and intimidation. At PUC-SP, a law professor reported being targeted by student activists due to his political views. Meanwhile, political scientist Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro has criticized the perceived apathy of professors in the face of attacks on federal universities, such as an arson incident at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE).
