Ucayali protests escalate with police clashes and road blockades

Protests in the Ucayali region of Peru over rising fuel prices and infrastructure needs have escalated into violent clashes. Demonstrators have maintained blockades on the Federico Basadre highway, specifically near kilometer 34 in the Campo Verde district, disrupting the transport of goods and essential services.

Clashes between protesters and the National Police resulted in several injuries to officers and the burning of a police patrol car. While regional Governor Manuel Gambini signed an agreement with some transport unions to end the strike following government announcements of diesel subsidies, other groups, including the Frente de Defensa de Ucayali, have rejected the deal and declared the strike indefinite.

The unrest has had fatal consequences; the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) reported the death of a patient who was being transported by ambulance to Pucallpa. The patient, suffering from a stroke and hypertension, could not receive timely specialized care due to the road blockages.

In response to the fuel shortages, the Peruvian government, led by President Keiko Fujimori, announced a diesel subsidy of 15 to 20 percent for various transport sectors. Additionally, the Ministry of Energy and Mines is coordinating with Petroperú and Aguaytía Energy to increase fuel storage capacity in the region to stabilize supply.
