Páucar del Sara Sara community demands stop to mining in Mírmaca River
Residents of the Mírmaca settlement in Peru’s Páucar del Sara Sara province have called for an immediate suspension of mining extraction and material transport from the Mírmaca River, warning that the activities could cause irreversible damage to the micro‑basin, river channel, banks and a local bridge. The community, together with campesino groups and social organisations, says the work began without prior notice or participation and demands full transparency on the permits authorising the project. They have asked the provincial municipality to disclose administrative files, technical and legal reports and to order an urgent inspection. The protestors also request the involvement of the National Water Authority, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation and the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office to evaluate the impacts and verify compliance with legal requirements. As of the latest reports, the relevant authorities have not issued a statement or indicated any concrete actions in response to the demands.
