Puccini Festival opens with Madama Butterfly in Torre del Lago

The 72nd edition of the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago has commenced with performances of Madama Butterfly, drawing varied critical interpretations regarding its staging and direction.

One production featured an innovative approach to the tragic finale, where the protagonist commits suicide by stabbing herself in the abdomen while facing away from the audience. This performance was noted for its evocative use of lighting, including a scene where the stage transformed into an infinite starry sky during a silent chorus.

Another staging, directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini, utilized a more traditional set featuring a large fan structure with video projections. While some critics noted the production felt overly predictable and lacked sufficient rehearsal time in certain movements, the final scene was highlighted for its unique use of manga-style ideograms and a ritualistic portrayal of the character's death. Soprano Selene Zanetti performed the lead role, receiving recognition for her attentive phrasing and effective characterization during conversational passages.
