Puducherry outlines industrial and infrastructure expansion plans
Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan has outlined a long-term vision for Puducherry focused on industrial development, investment attraction, and environmental sustainability. Addressing the 16th Puducherry Legislative Assembly during its first budget session, he reported that the territory's economy grew by 8.12 per cent in 2025-26, surpassing the national GDP growth rate.
Major infrastructure and economic projects include a proposed Rs 4,800-crore expansion of the Puducherry airport, which would extend the runway to 2,300 metres to accommodate larger aircraft. Economic expansion plans also feature a Rs 725-crore IT/ITES Special Economic Zone at Thattanchavady and a Rs 2,500-crore Multi-Modal SEZ at Karasur.
Urban and coastal development will be supported by a Rs 4,750-crore integrated livability project backed by the Asian Development Bank and a Rs 1,433-crore coastal resilience project assisted by the World Bank. Social welfare measures include increasing women's pensions from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 and raising the constituency development fund for MLAs from Rs 2 crore to Rs 3 crore.
