Mexico and South Korea sign 17 agreements to boost trade and defense FAST-MOVING

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met in Mexico City to formalize the Mexico-Korea Action Plan 2026-2030. The summit resulted in the signing of 17 memorandums of understanding covering economy, finance, culture, technology, and security.

Key economic agreements include the establishment of a new bilateral dialogue channel for crude oil and critical mineral supply chains. The leaders also finalized a long-standing investment protection agreement and discussed the necessity of a future trade agreement. Bilateral trade reached approximately 27 billion dollars in 2025, supported by over 2,000 South Korean companies operating in Mexico.

In the defense and technology sectors, South Korea proposed expanding military cooperation, including the potential for local production of defense technology in Mexico to support Mexican military modernization. Cooperation will also extend to artificial intelligence, aerospace, and digital transformation.

Cultural exchange was a major focus, with discussions regarding the establishment of a K-pop culture center in Mexico and a Mexican Culture Institute in South Korea. Additionally, both nations agreed to cooperate against transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and online fraud.
