Ecuador: Eight bodies found in illegal mine in Azuay
Authorities in Azuay, Ecuador, discovered eight bodies—seven men and one woman—buried in two clandestine pits within an illegal gold and copper mine in the Pucará municipality. The victims, who had reportedly been missing since August 7, showed signs of extreme violence, including dismemberment and decapitation, likely inflicted with machetes rather than firearms.
The bodies were found at a depth of approximately two meters in a difficult-to-access mountainous area near Huasipamba. Police also recovered two incinerated vehicles at the scene. Investigators believe the victims had been dead for roughly 48 hours before the discovery, which followed reports of gunfire in the area.
This massacre highlights the growing influence of organized crime in Ecuador's illegal mining sector, as criminal groups increasingly compete for control over illicit mineral resources alongside traditional drug trafficking routes.
