Puebla cave collapse kills four, leaves three trapped

On 7 July 2026, a tourist group entered the Gruta de Chichicazapan in Cuetzalan, Puebla, during heavy rain. The guide, who lacked official certification and was not registered with either federal or state tourism authorities, led the party into a restricted section of the cave. Rising water trapped the group; three people escaped, while four were later found dead. Three additional bodies remain missing in a deep, hazardous chamber about 4 km from the entrance.

State authorities, led by Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier and Secretary of Governance Samuel Aguilar Pala, have launched an investigation into the illegal guide operation and are providing institutional support to the victims’ families. Rescue efforts, coordinated by civil protection, the National Guard, state police, and volunteer rescue groups, were halted temporarily due to worsening weather. The investigation will determine responsibility for the tragedy, and officials have urged tourists to verify guide credentials before entering adventure sites.

The incident has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of tourism regulations in Puebla’s “Pueblos Mágicos,” highlighting the risks of unregistered operators in hazardous natural attractions.
