Puebla Congress to update Code of Ethics after discrimination controversy

The Puebla Congress has announced plans to update its Code of Ethics following a recommendation from the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). The move comes after local deputies Nayeli Salvatori Bojalily and Graciela Palomares Ramírez faced criticism for making discriminatory comments regarding older adults.

Pável Gaspar Ramírez, president of the Government and Political Coordination Board, stated that while the legislature already possesses internal regulations based on principles of justice, equity, and human rights, the codes must be updated to meet current social demands. He confirmed that a working group will be established in coordination with the Human Rights Commission of Puebla to review and refine these standards.

Regarding the controversial remarks, Gaspar Ramírez noted that the deputies' actions did not align with the legislative body's ethical values. However, he clarified that as elected officials, the party cannot mandate their expulsion from the Morena caucus; rather, the deputies must decide their own continued membership within the parliamentary group.
