Puebla cracks down on illegal landfills and non‑compliant crematoriums

Only ten of Puebla’s 83 waste‑disposal sites are authorized sanitary landfills, and those are already at capacity. State Environment Secretary Marilyn Ballesteros García announced supervision of both illegal and authorized sites, sanctions for irregularities, and noted that some municipalities have been forced to ship waste to neighboring Tlaxcala and Veracruz. The government is planning new Waste Transformation Centers—estimated at 500 million pesos each—in San Martín Texmelucan, the Sierra Nororiental, and Tehuacán.

Separately, inspectors from the State Environment Secretariat closed the Funeraria Renacimiento crematorium in Cuautlancingo after finding it lacked the required environmental impact study and sanitary permits, following resident complaints about offensive odors. All 40 crematories operating in Puebla must now meet strict environmental and health standards, with closures and suspensions possible for non‑compliance.
