Judge Enrique Romero Razo arrested in Puebla, Mexico

Enrique Romero Razo, a judge for the Tecamachalco Judicial District in Puebla, was arrested on October 20 following a search operation at his residence in the El Ángel neighborhood. He faces charges including crimes against the administration of justice and the evasion of prisoners.

The investigation suggests that in September 2024, Romero Razo failed to remit essential legal documents to an itinerant execution judge, an omission that allegedly facilitated the escape of an individual from the Tecamachalco jail on September 18. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Tepexi de Rodríguez detention center.

The arrest follows significant controversy regarding Romero Razo’s involvement in the case of Manuel Forcelledo Nader, who was sentenced to 76 years in prison for the 2014 feminicide of Karla López Albert. In May, a legal controversy arose when a modification of precautionary measures was authorized during a period when Romero Razo had requested a leave of absence, allowing a court secretary to approve changes that could have allowed the convict to remain outside of prison.

The Judicial Power of the State of Puebla has issued a statement supporting the actions of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), emphasizing a commitment to legality and stating that the institution does not protect judicial officials involved in irregular conduct.
