Puebla government denies Israeli technology is for spying

Officials in Puebla, Mexico, have rejected allegations that the state Prosecutor's Office (FGE) is acquiring Israeli technology for espionage purposes. State Cabinet Coordinator José Luis García Parra clarified that the Cellebrite software is intended for forensic analysis of mobile devices seized during legal proceedings, such as raids, arrests, and operations.

García Parra emphasized that the system is designed to extract data from secured phones to provide evidence for criminal investigations, rather than to monitor citizens or political opponents. He explicitly stated that the equipment is not a surveillance tool like Pegasus.

Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier also addressed the controversy, asserting that his administration does not engage in political persecution and will only use the technology to combat crime. State Prosecutor Idamis Pastor Betancourt added that the tool is necessary because a significant portion of modern criminal evidence is stored in digital environments.
