Puebla Governor reaffirms BUAP autonomy and announces Valsequillo rescue
Puebla Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier has reaffirmed the state government's respect for the autonomy of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) during the first activity report of Rector María Lilia Cedillo Ramírez. Armenta emphasized a commitment to dialogue and coordination, aiming for a balanced budget by 2030 where federal and state resources each contribute 50 percent to the university's funding.
In addition to supporting BUAP's academic and infrastructure projects, such as the development of Ciudad Universitaria 2, the state is launching an environmental rescue project for Lake Valsequillo. This initiative involves the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) and the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation. The project will utilize the UNESCO Chair in Water Administration and Management to bring in international experts.
A key component of the Valsequillo plan is a circular economy model to manage invasive water hyacinth, which currently covers approximately 80 percent of the lake's surface. The plan involves removing the plant to be converted into paving stones and soil improvers, helping to restore water quality and address local erosion.
