Mario Delgado defends educational policies and scholarships before deputies
Mario Delgado Carrillo, the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), appeared before the Chamber of Deputies' Education Commission to report on federal educational progress. Delgado highlighted the expansion of scholarship programs, noting that 22 million students from preschool to higher education are beneficiaries of programs such as Rita Cetina, Universal Benito Juárez, and Jóvenes Escribiendo el Futuro.
During the session, Delgado addressed criticisms regarding school infrastructure and the content of free textbooks. He defended the current materials against claims of ideological bias and noted that the 'La Escuela es Nuestra' program has supported over 73,000 educational centers. Additionally, he reported on the distribution of 154 million free textbooks for the 2026-2027 cycle.
Opposition legislators questioned the Secretary on declining PISA test scores, school dropout rates, and the adequacy of school infrastructure. They specifically raised concerns about the impact of economic difficulties on student attendance and the effectiveness of current scholarship models in addressing systemic educational challenges.
