Puebla vendors march against extortion and death threats
Hundreds of street vendors in Puebla, Mexico, marched through the city center to protest increasing extortion and death threats. The demonstrators, led by the Movimiento Antorchista organization, are demanding immediate intervention from state authorities to address violence in the San Ramón and Bosques de San Sebastián areas.
Vendors reported that a group known as “13 de septiembre” has been attempting to seize control of the “La Curva” market in San Ramón by demanding illegal fees and threatening those who refuse to pay. The insecurity has reportedly affected both the merchants and the local residents who frequent the market for essential goods.
A commission of merchants met with officials from the administration of Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier following the march. During the meeting, government representatives made commitments to resolve the security issues and ensure that vendors can work without fear of violence.
